GARAGE SALE - The 2012 Watt Space Open Show

Curated by Emily Coutts, Sigourney Nicholson and Elric Ringstad

Judges: Newcastle-based artists John Turier and Ken O’Regan, both of whom use recycled objects in their own works.

Opening night of Garage Sale is Thursday 17May at 6.30pm and is a chance to talk to the artists and see which works are awarded prizes.

As we become more aware of our impact on the environment, many art makers are changing the types of materials they use to make their works; they  are reusing found objects, mixing materials and disciplines, old stuff/ new stuff/ recycling.

For this exhibition, students at the University of Newcastle have been asked to think about their art making within this framework, considering the implications of their production on the world we live in. The students have created new work from every discipline and in any style to demonstrate their own thoughts on the environment and art’s place within it.

The curating team has sourced prizes from a variety of local sponsors to provide prizes for selected works.

Sponsored by Suki Hairdressing, Mistletoe Wines, Kylie Moore, Snap Printing, the Co-Op Bookshop, the Print Centre, Bunnings Warehouse Kotara, and The Hunter  U Shop, UoN Services and The School of Drama, Fine Art and Music.

The exhibition continues until 6pm Sunday 3 June. Gallery hours are 12 noon – 6pm Wednesday to Sunday.
